Edit: Funny that the next day, after posting this, a hammock salesman tried to cheat me big time. One of his sales speaches was: “Come on, anything you want you got it.”
I couldn’t help laughing. I Wasn’t even buying a hammock but I still wanted to test drive the world famous hammocks of Merida. They say that this is the worlds capital of hammocks. The Mayan people used them back in the day. Even today, according to local anthropology student, 90% of locals sleep in hammocks… Right.

The starting price for single size hammock was 2300 pesos (over 125 euros) and this was a good price since the sales person had a same name as me. After 20 minutes of talking the price was 1700 and when I was about to walk out the price was 1300 pesos. He shouldn’t have started the negotiations by saying: “Ok, you just pay for the materials. Let’s say 2000 pesos” Finally he asked a tip for the Mayan people. I mean damn these people try to rob every single penny! Foreigner = money! I’m starting to get it now.

Don’t pay more than 400 pesos if you are in Merida buying a Hammock. What ever they tell you about Mayan labour etc.. !!
