After diving in Utila in the Bay Islands in Honduras I have to say that pretending to be a fish underwater is probably the most addictive thing I’ve ever tried. The closest thing I can compare it with is running with bulls in Pamplona. By that comparison I mean the rush of motions they both gave. Flying in this 3D world where everything is new and exciting is almost imposible to describe.

Many try comparing diving to floating in the space but my guess is it’s even better. I mean in space you have no control of where you are going. In space if you push yourself into a certain direction it’s a one way ticket where as while diving you can go to all directions simple by controlling your body and breathing. There is something extremely Zen in diving. They say that astronauts often don’t want to come down from space and that is exactly what happened to me while diving. I didn’t want to come up.

I’m up now and left Honduras behind me after spending a day in the capital Tegucigalpa. I was planning on staying in that city for few days to get to know the city and it’s surroundings but one full day was enough. Me and a Swedish guy wanted to climb up a hill next to the city but after walking for 10 blocks we found ourselves in a neighbourhood were kids were playing on the street and men were sniffing glue. That meant 180 degrees for us and a walk back to the city center. From there we walked two blocks down to a bridge that crosses the river and bumped into the same scene. This time the drugged people were street kids. 180 degrees, restaurant, bag of beer and back to the hostel.

I have to say I’ve been disappointed with the capitals of Central America, excluding Mexico City where I stayed for 2 weeks. That city is awesome.

Now I just got to the city of Leon in Nicaragua. This city feels already like a much more chilled place to stay for a while. You can actually walk on the streets during the night time. Then again this is a tourist city so… boring.

I’ve made the decision of starting to travel selectively. That means I’m not trying to see everything from every country. Even though it’s the only sane decision I still feel bad rushing through different countries. I know that El Salvador and Honduras would have had a lot more to offer if I had had the energy to get of from the ‘travel guide path’. Well at least I know there is something left in these countries for future travels.

Many travelers use the word ‘do’ or ‘did’ about the places, cities, countries and even continents they have visited (more of that topic somewhere in the future). Personally I hate that term. I have to say that in no means did I ‘do’ El Salvador or Honduras. I just visited them briefly and for that I’m a bit bummed. One thing I could still do is to go back to Honduras at the end of this month when the new presidents is going to start leading the country with huge ceremonies. I’m sure it would be interesting with the ex-president stuck in the Brazilian embassy and his supporters being pissed of to the new president. Then again, nobody is paying me to cover that story so I think I’ll prefer to go surfing to the Pacific than get tear gas into my eyes.

So now I’m in Leon where I might climb up some volcanos and after that I’ll head to the beach to surf some more. I haven’t checked inside my surf bag in two weeks so I hope the board is still in one piece. I’m trying to learn how to control my curiosity so I think I’ll leave that surprise for the beach.
