Hiking up volcano Tajumulco, the highest peak in Central America

The hills of the mountain were a sad sight. Locals had destroyed almost entirely the dense forest that once covered the whole mountain.

It hardly rained during our hike but rain gear is essential on these trips.

Cheesy I know but I couldn’t help trying out the remote control for my camera. 4220 meters + that rock.

Sun is rising from the horizont. It was a cold morning but I had used to the weather after badly slept night in my own cold sleeping bag. Quetzaltrekkers had warmer sleeping bags but I wanted to see the limit of my bag. It is 2 degrees celsius.

On the way back we passed some corn fields.

At the end we had to pay this guy one euro each for walking up the mountain. The money is raised to build a road to the top of the mountain. That is just sad.

Wow, great pictures! looks like a good place for a hike. Another one not far away is around Panajachel, Guatamala.
The clearcutting photo: speechless! Stark reminder of why countries need strong environmental legislation. BTW same thing can be seen in Southern China (clear cutting – there are literally no trees in certain regions, and it’s not because the conditions are unfavorable).
The rest of the photos: wow, amazing. What can I say? The great trip continues on. And you know we think of you often and wish you continuing happy & blessed travels every day. It’s really awesome that you do what you do.
Would be amazing to travel as a team sometime like we talked about in the past.
